Setting Sail: The Journey Begins

‘A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor – in projects or in life’

In my first post, ‘Projects, Purpose, and the Puzzle of Life’, I talked about the importance of seeing both the pieces and the bigger picture – whether you’re managing a project or navigating your own life. This time I want to set the stage for where we go next.

Before I ever stepped into a project boardroom, I served as a Marine Engineering Artificer in the Royal Navy. Life at sea is its own form of project management: tasks to be coordinated, resources to be managed, and missions to be delivered – often in fast-changing, high pressure conditions. You quickly learn that a plan is only the starting point – real success comes from steering through the unexpected turns.

That’s the heart of this blog. Yes, we will talk about project management, but not as something locked away for professionals with Gantt charts and risk registers. It’s a mindset for everyone – whether you’re planning a holiday, starting a business, tackling a home renovation, or steering your way through a personal crossroads.

Each post is essentially part of an ongoing story – sometimes from my professional work, sometimes from my Navy days, and often a blend with everyday life. We’ll look at what went right, what went wrong, and what can be learned. Then we will connect those lessons back to principles you can use in your own projects, big or small.

Because life, in so many ways, is the biggest project we’ll ever manage, the more we understand how the pieces fit together, the better the chances of shaping the outcome we want.

So welcome aboard – our journey is just beginning.
